10 times Rihanna broke the internet with her fashion choices

Rihanna is one of the most fashionable artists, and she has her ‘Fenty’ Fashion House to prove it.

Rihanna is one of the most fashionable artists, and she has her ‘Fenty’ Fashion House to prove it. From makeup to clothes to accessories, she kills it every time. We are reminiscing 10 times that Rihanna broke the internet with her fashion choices.

1. Rihanna at the 2018 MET Gala

Rihanna shut down the evening with a custom John Galliano ensemble complete with a mitre hat. Her fans dubbed her ‘Pope Rihanna’ as the dress was in line with the year’s theme, “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”, which left her looking like a fashion trendy pope. She definitely was the officiating minister of the red carpet.

2. Rihanna in a floral dress at the 2017 MET Gala

The 2017 MET Gala was themed ‘Commes des Garcon/ Rei Kawakubo: Art Of The In-Between’. Rihanna showed up in a floral creation by Commes des Garcons. The dress consisted of floral fabrics, layered and pulled apart like petals. She complimented the dress with a high topknot and purple accentuated makeup.

3. Rihanna’s ‘fried egg’ dress at the 2015 MET Gala

Her 2015 MET Gala ‘fried egg’ dress was the highlight of the night. The night’s theme was to honour China’s influence in fashion and she opted to wear a canary yellow cape couture piece by Guo Pei. Before the night was over, memes made rounds on the internet comparing the dress to different forms of fried egg, omelette and pizza. FunFact: It took the Chinese designer two years to make the dress.

4. Rihanna wearing a sheer crystal-covered dress

In 2014, Rihanna won the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) Fashion Icon Award and when she stepped on the red carpet, the internet was never the same. Wearing a sheer, Swarovski-crystal encrusted Adam Selman gown, Rihanna ushered in a new era of naked dresses. The gown was made with over 230,000 crystals and it took 20 people to get the dress done.

5. Rihanna at her ‘Wild Thoughts’ performance at the 2018 Grammys

Rihanna went with a pink, super glittery Adam Selman creation again, for her 2018 Grammy Awards performance of ‘Wild Thoughts’. Her stylist, in an appreciation post to the designer, let us know that the dress was made with a whopping 275,000 crystal. Even more than her CFDA dress.

6. Rihanna at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards

Rihanna opened the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards so she couldn’t make it to the red carpet, but she more than compensated for that absence with all her stage performance outfits. The outfit that caught the most buzz was her pale pink outfit courtesy of Hood By Air. She wore a top with a corset which was attached to her pants.

7. Rihanna at Crop Over festival in Barbados

As an island girl from Barbados, Rihanna regularly goes home to attend a carnival or two. She created a social media uproar when she posted pictures of herself at the 2017 Crop Over, a harvest festival in Barbados. She sported a jewel-encrusted costume adorned with green and pink feathers. Let’s not forget that brightly coloured turquoise hair that brought the entire look to completion.

8. Rihanna at the 2015 Grammy Award red carpet

For the red carpet of the 2015 Grammys, Rihanna showed up in what some described as a ‘pink tent’ or the ‘sponge’ dress. She showed up in a pink Giambattista Valli Couture princess gown, which definitely left many heads reeling. Her fans obviously used the opportunity to troll the artist creating different memes and picture edits.

9. Rihanna at the 2011 Grammys

We did mention Rihanna had a fancy for sheer dresses. Back in 2011 at the Grammy Awards, Rihanna left little to the imagination when she took the red carpet in a white Jean Paul Gaultier dress.

10. Rihanna in a heart-shaped fur jacket

Do you remember the heart jacket? Well sometime in 2016, Rihanna went out for a fun night in New York, wearing a Saint Laurent red faux fur shaped like a heart. She paired the fur jacket with cutoff jean shorts and black Dsquared2 Riri sandals, named after her.

Looking at these, it comes as no surprise to see the success of her fashion brand ‘Fenty’ and her continued influence in the world of fashion.
