Last night saw a lot of our celebrities step out in style for The Headies 2016, but as we’ve come to expect, a few of them failed to impress and we’re bringing them to book in hopes that they get it right in the future.
So, in no particular order, here are the culprits from The Headies 2016.
Seyi Shay
Seyi Shay had two chances to impress last night and she failed at each one of them. Her red carpet look was very unflattering and so was her performance outfit. I just sat there shaking my head at such waste of prospects.
I mean if Tiwa Savage is the Nigerian Beyonce then Seyi Shay is like Rihanna (?) but without the same great sense of style. And I don’t get what the problem is. She has a great body and Moashy who does most of her styling isn’t half bad. So it’s either Moashy doesn’t know what to do with her (which is very unfortunate) or he’s just not as great as I think he is. I’ve seen her look good alright but she has had way more misses than hits so, maybe it’s time to start shopping for a new stylist Seyi.
Simi
I was waiting with baited breath and praying that Simi – my favorite Nigerian singer at the moment doesn’t fall my hand. And then I saw her sashaying in wearing this orange number with zero wow factor. I burst out in tears on the inside like “how dare you! I was rooting for you!”
Simi’s style is so underwhelming I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve seen her get it right and those few times have been fairly recent. She finally listened and got herself a stylist in the person of Jane Michael Ekanem and we’ve seen some improvement in her style but I believe they can do so much better and this is the major reason she’s on this list.
Adunni Ade
I was so speechless when I saw this look that I threw it to our social media followers to seek their opinion and boy, were they brutal.
The general opinion on our Twitter was that, everything about this look, from the hat to the bomber jacket that showed off her not-so-toned midriff and the skirt screams low-budget Rihanna.
You know I love that she didn’t try to play it safe with this look but the thing about taking risk with fashion is that when it doesn’t come out as well as you intended, you have no one but yourself to blame.
Eva Alordiah
I get the feeling Eva styles herself – which is absolutely fine if she knows what she’s doing. And I also get the feeling she fancies herself artistic and she absolutely is. (Have you seen her makeup, writing or listened to her songs?)
So, she tries to infuse this “artistic” side of her into her styling and every single time, it falls flat. Like last night, she was going for some sort of Grecian vibe (I guess) that ended up looking just too tacky.
This coming year, I hope getting a stylist is topmost on the rapper’s list of priorities because she needs it, like yesterday.
OC Ukeje
Sigh! If you’re reputed to be one of the finest actors out of Nigeria, the least you can do is make an effort to dress the part. Oh wait, I think he actually does make a lot of effort, like I mean it must have taken a lot of effort to come up with this busy look, no?
DJ Cuppy
I love DJ Cuppy’s love for African prints. It has become something of a signature to her. But anything worth doing is worth doing well. If embracing the Ankara as her signature style is her way of showcasing our rich culture to the rest of the world, then she needs to make it more appealing and desirable.
I mean take a look at this dowdy dress, who would see this and think of hopping on the Ankara wagon? This dress is so matronly, it made her look way older than her 24 years of age.
Destiny Amaka
Girl, what in the world were you thinking! This look hurts my eyes if I’m being honest and I really can’t spare it a second look.
Lolo
Haba Adaku! No words guys, no words.
Haba fa! Eva beht why??!!!
