Any type of shoes with a raised platform is referred to as an heel. The ‘heel’ is the raised point that is usually meant to be under ones heel.
These are 5 facts about the origins of heels:

1. High-heels were first worn by 15th century Persian soldiers who wore them to help secure their feet in stirrups. The Persian migrants brought the shoe trend to Europe, where male aristocrats wore them to appear taller and was a symbol of strength.

2. Between the 15th and 17th century, Chopines were popular among upper-class European women. In Venice, the shoes sometimes reached up to 30 inches (76 cm) that maids used as crutches. Although, Venetian law limited the height to three inches, the rule was ignored.

3. Christian Louboutin didn’t invent red sole shoes. In 1673, French king Louis XIV wore shoes with red heels and red soles to the French court.

4. After heeled shoes became popular in European societies, new rules regulated the length for heels. ½ inch for commoners, 1 inch for the bourgeois, 1 and ½ inches for knights, 2 inches for nobles, and 2 and ½ inches for princes.

5. Stiletto heels are named after the stiletto dagger, and were first recorded in the early 1930s. The heels may vary in length from 1 inch (2.5 cm) to 10 inches (25 cm).
