7 Natural Hair Must-Haves

Keeping one’s natural hair started as a trend/movement but it has gone beyond a trend and become a lifestyle. Virtually everyone I know is suddenly transitioning or having the big chop – which is just the beginning of the journey.

The glamour surrounding the natural hair lifestyle isn’t what it’s portrayed to be. From bad hair days to being rejected by some hair stylists, every naturalista understands the struggle in trying to make your hair look at least presentable (after going through 3 different styles and failing).

However, regardless of your hair texture, there are some things that everyone who is really serious about having a healthy natural mane should have. And below, we’ve listed 7 of these must-haves plus a few bonuses.

1. Spray bottle

This is a must-have. Any clean container with a spritz head will do. You can also recycle perfume and spray bottles. Your bottle should contain at least one oil (Coconut Oil, Baby Oil, Castor Oil, Tea Tree Oil or Olive oil) and water. You can experiment with a mixture of oils. My mixture is baby oil, apple cider vinegar and water.

2. Combs

Breaking combs is a natural hair initiation rite. Wide tooth combs are highly recommended, they reduce the headache and have more coverage.

3. Silk scarf:

This is a curly haired girl’s best friend. Silk scarves keeps curls in place so you won’t wake up with hair that looks like it has lost home training. They are also used to lay edges.

4. Leave in conditioners

This is for those times your hair needs extra moisture.

5. Shea butter

Nature’s alternative to leave in conditioner. They also function as oils too.

6. Shower cap

These can be alternatives to a silk scarf. They also help to lock in moisture and the heat softens the hair.

7. Hair ties

Hair ties-234Star

Rubber bands, Fancy hair ties, Shoe laces, strings, ribbons all fall in this category. This is very necessary in achieving that sleek bun.

Honorable Mentions

  • Toothbrush: To lay your edges
  • Edge Control: To define edges
  • Wigs: Short, long, straight, wavy, curly. They come in different styles, lengths and colours. They are the ultimate ally when you’re having a bad hair day. Just slip one on and voila, you’re ready to go!
