From basic necessities to more specialized items, here are seven things you should consider stocking up on in preparation for the 2023 General Elections.

Food and Water

It is always a good idea to have a stock of non-perishable food items such as canned goods, pasta, rice, and snacks in case there is a disruption in the availability of food or if you prefer to stay home during the election. Ensure you also have enough drinking water for at least a few days.

Personal Hygiene Supplies

It is important to keep yourself and your living space clean and sanitary during a time of potential unrest. Stock up on personal hygiene items such as soap, hand sanitiser, toilet paper, and other essential toiletries.

Entertainment and Communication

During an election, there may be periods of waiting and uncertainty. Make sure you have books, games, or other forms of entertainment to keep yourself and your family occupied. It is also a good idea to have internet connectivity to stay informed about the latest news and updates on the election. A cherry on top: you can access such entertainment and election updates on the streaming service platform Showmax in one fell swoop.

Cash

There has been a scarcity of Naira in the election run-up. However, it is essential to find means to have cash at hand – even if it means paying more at POS stands – in case of disruptions to electronic payment systems. Endeavour to have enough to cover necessary expenses such as groceries or medical supplies.

Fuel and Diesel

This will ensure that you have enough fuel to power your home if there is a power outage. It is also a good idea to have a backup plan in case you run out of fuel, such as an alternate source of transportation or a generator that can run on a different type of fuel.

Emergency Numbers

Emergency numbers to have on hand may include your local police division, your local hospital or healthcare provider, your utility company, and your bank or credit card company. Make sure to keep these numbers in a readily accessible place and teach them to any family members who may need to use them.

Medications and First Aid Supplies

Stock up on essential medications and first aid supplies such as bandages, antiseptics, pain relievers, and any prescription medications you may need. It is also a good idea to have a first aid manual on hand.
