Dare Olubunmi: Basic Fashion Rules To Live By

I often get asked by people, mostly my friends, that do I have my personal style rules? Of course I do. And then they expect me to say “uhmmn, I don’t wear this”, “I avoid that,” and “I hate color combinations”. Nah, those are not my fashion rules. I mostly consider the situation, environment and culture when I dress and style people. What I wear to a presentation in class during the day is very different from what I would wear to watch movies with my friends. I like to define my own style but at the same time I have rules that I follow and these rules have always helped me communicate my fashion sense to people.

First, Give A Damn!

This is my first rule; give a damn about what you are wearing. You need to pay attention to what you wear and how you wear it. You can wear the most expensive clothes and look like a child because you are not bothered about how you look. Your dressing represents your family, your values. Etc. that’s why it’s important you care about your dressing. Dressing good gives you this unimaginable boost of self-esteem, it raises your confidence, makes you feel good about yourself. So give a damn, dress like you give a damn.

Understand A Bit Of Fashion

Sometimes when I tell people I share an emotional bond with my clothes, they give me this weird funny look and then I get the talk about being vain, but really what I mean is I understand my clothes, I understand some bits about fashion maybe not all because trust me fashion rules are a lot and they change every time. Trying to memorize the dos and don’ts of fashion can be extremely confusing. There is just too much of it. So what do you do? Understand some basic things like trouser cuffs gives you an informal look and that suits should be void of cuffs and also that some fashion accessories can make your dressing look really good and some can make you look stupid. Understanding your fashion is knowing why, I understand that sometimes fashion rules can be stylishly broken but you need to know what you are doing and why. Let’s take for example, the wearing of sun glasses indoors, I still don’t understand the rationale behind it and it is very common among our celebrities. Why? Understanding this would prevent you from looking stupid. So before you wear those shades indoors because you think it’s a cool style, ask yourself why? Why I am wearing shades indoors? And I also think awon ‘face cap people’ are a great example of why this rule is important, you  probably know them, those that wear face caps and wear it with everything, sometimes you look out of place with it. Sorry guys, but it’s the truth. Understand that face cap is a very casual fashion accessory and it’s not to be worn everywhere.

Don’t Be Shy

Never be afraid to be the best dressed person in a room. Never be afraid to stand out with your dressing. Rock your clothes with confidence, because if you follow my number one rule it is very bound to happen. You may sometimes feel overdressed particularly if you are the only one wearing heels when other are on sandals. But the truth is, you will be treated differently, in a positive way, because in a gathering where you are smartly dressed with your flats and not sandals, one would assume you are someone important and treat you accordingly.

Go For Your Size

This is one important thing when it comes to looking good, remember when I said you could be wearing the most expensive clothes and still look a child, oh well this could be because you didn’t get the clothes in your size. The cloth won’t look good on you unless it fits your body well. This is a plain and simple rule. A good cloth should be able to flatter your body, it should be able to highlight certain parts of your body and draw the right attention. A good fitted cloth can also work to flatter your tummy for those who have the big tummy issues; you don’t need to wear ill-fitting clothes to cover the protruding tummy. Learn to run away from clothes with a style you like but with a fit that cannot be adjusted to fit you.

Don’t Go Over The Top With Trends

When I shop, I buy trends but I make sure I don’t go over the top. I try to buy things that are in a way timeless, clothes I can always wear at any time if I can’t afford the latest trends and still look good. Some certain looks are always going to be dependable; I can always go back to them in years to come. Stay clear of latest trends because those trends that lasted during our parent’s time are very different from what is trending. So when you shop, stick to a look that is timeless and classic.
