Ditch Branded Shirts! Here’s What You Should Be Wearing To The Polling Unit

There are spoken and unspoken rules on what to wear to your polling unit during election season. Whether that is bluntly unlawful outfits like politically branded outfits and accessories or tight-fitting clothing that do not make you feel comfortable, there is a range of acceptable and unacceptable clothing for the voting centre.

According to the constitution, canvassing for votes within a distance of 300 metres of a polling unit, whether through displaying a political party symbol or card or persuading other voters through any means, is liable to a ₦100,000 penalty or six months of imprisonment.

As elections start on Saturday, February 25, 2023, here are some suggestions on what to wear and accessories that would make the experience tolerable.

Sneaker/Loafers

The goal is to be comfortable while looking as stylish as possible. It’s not the time and place for mules because you would probably be standing a lot inside the sun. Things could also go left, you can’t always tell with elections in Nigeria, so it’s important that you can move quickly in whatever you have on. With this in mind, it is advisable to wear sneakers, loafers, or sandals – the low-heeled options are the best.

Loose Fitting Clothing

Tight-fitting clothing and Nigeria’s sun are not exactly the best mixes. You would want to wear something that feels free, and you can breathe in. No corsets or extravagant clothing. It is actually advisable to dress as neutral as possible and avoid directing unnecessary attention to yourself. Vote quietly and go home.

Tracksuits

Although loose-fitting clothes are advisable, clothing items like tracksuits, running tights, and other comfortable clothing options can work as well. They enable you to move freely, but they are just as stylish and would go well with whatever sneaker or loafer option you choose to go with.
