For every time I hear the question, ‘What is your favorite colour?’ My immediate response is Black. Yes I’m used to hearing the next line, ‘Be serious, black is not a colour, it only absorbs colour and reflects it bla bla bla’, I beg to differ! For me black has always been everything and more than a lot of these ‘glorified’ colours put together.
I haven’t always being this way, in fact growing up I initially thought one can’t wear black to every occasion, for instance a wedding especially as Nollywood didn’t help matter by almost always portraying black as a funeral colour back then. So while something in me loved black, I always had this gentle reminder that black couldn’t be my go to colour for all occasions. For everyone who is like me and love black to bits, this is a nod that you’re totally cool like that, black is a ‘colour’, period! As good as this sounds though, all black is also tricky and must be handled with the right styling mindset to get the best looks out of it. Check below for a few style tips I live by when rocking my all black.
Never pair different shades
To be honest, now is not the time to play mix and match with different shades of black. The best way to get the best aesthetics out of all black is to maintain one shade. It gives me that classic I’m in control vibe unlike pairing different shades and looking like I’m a walking closet disaster, seriously!
Show some skin
While I’m not advocating for nudity, a little tease never hurts anyone especially if it will give your outfit that glam we all love to see at events and owambe. I’m not sure how to explain this but there’s just this wow effect that comes with the combo of all black and skin. You might want to try it sometime to really get a hang of it.
The right shade matters
Many are still wondering if black has shades, or may be this is about fifty shade of black…, hell no!, not sorry to burst your bubble. my advice? google it! Because a great all black look starts with finding the right shade of black. Shades differ depending on skin tone. You can try testing the black outfit on your skin while shopping especially around your neck area. It’s either your face lights up or looks gloomy.
The accent colours I’m talking about ranges from hair colour to make up, body art etc. Accent colours’ contrast is a statement maker especially when combined with the all black ensemble. You can call it the pop that brings life to the gloomy look that sometimes come with an All black outfit. I have noticed a red lipstick brings in the magic to my all black look.
I still think the best accessory for all black is gold (Ermm maybe because that works best for me), but if you’re a silver person or you think silver goes better with your skin tone, by all means feel free to rock it. Just try and stick to one because combining silver and gold accessories with all black might end up giving you a tacky look.
P.S:
All black also goes with pop of colour especially if you’re trying to balance the slimming effect that comes with it. In the end its all about the style you intend to achieve. It’s all about your creativity and it’s all about your style and not about me. So go do you with your all black! (Thank me later if these tips work for you too )
