If you are a genuine fashionista, then you’ll know that nothing hurts more than being called out for wearing a fake…’E can pain ehn?’.
Unfortunately, that’s the position popular blogger Linda Ikeji has found herself, as she was called out on Instagram for buying a fake Hèrmes bag.
In her struggle to prove her ‘originality’, Linda has since posted several photos to explain her bags are original, from showing close ups of the bags, to stating the cost and stores she purchased them from. Why the struggle right? Well, she has a reputation to protect, or maybe not.
Another Instagram user has since shared similar evidence as Linda’s to prove that Hèrmes copies can be as detailed as the original.
So, is Linda Ikeji lying about her bags? Maybe…But for y’all who might have been tricked into buying a fake designer bag, or you’re saving up to buy one, here are ways for you to spot an original so you won’t be a ‘Linda’.
- First, the label stamp on the top of an original is always pretty high and close to the stitching. So if you see it in the middle, between the stitching and the lock, that’s a dead giveaway. Also make sure the stamp is straight…These little details are everything.
- Next, undo the lock and pull back the arm to reveal the blind stamp. Every Hermès bag is handmade by one artisan, so they put their own trademark on it, along with the blind stamp, which indicates the year it was made. However, this alone would not help, as fakes also carry stamps. The stamp on an original is usually faint and barely noticeable, while a fake stamp will be very deep, like it was machine-stamped, larger a real stamp.
- But if you don’t have an original to compare with, especially as a first timer, remember that it’s the little, barely noticeable details that will give fakes away. So check the stitching and the paint especially around edges and corners…Authentic Hèrmes stitching/hand painting is never sloppy, they’re perfectionists.
