Here Is Why It Took Sam Smith So Long To Open Up About His Sexuality

In a new interview with The Sunday Times, singer Sam Smith explains why it took him so long to talk about his sexuality.

“Looking back on it, it was the fear of saying the wrong thing and offending. And I was 19 when I started writing the first album. I’d just moved to London from a village, I was literally the only gay in the village. I didn’t know what I wanted to say.”

He further said while growing up he was a cross dresser and he never owned a single piece of male outfit.

“There was one moment in my life where I didn’t own a piece of male clothing, really. I would wear full make-up every day in school, eyelashes, leggings with Dr Martens and huge fur coats, for 2.5 years.I feel just as much woman as I am man. I got teased for it. But there were also people respecting me for walking around like that in my school.”

When asked if he feels like a cisgender (a person whose sense of personal identity and gender corresponds with their birth sex), he made reference to his tattoos.

“I mean, I’ve got these tattoos on my fingers. I don’t know what the title would be, but I feel just as much woman as I am man.”

Adding that, he loves feminine shoes and he still has a selection of them in his house.

“I love a heel. I’ve got loads of heels at home. People don’t know this, but when I was 17, I remember becoming obsessed with Boy George and Marilyn Monroe, and all that.”
