How To Hire The Right MC For Your Wedding

Weddings are beautiful. Not just because we all love love but don’t you just love the way everything is put together to actually look beautiful? The cake, decoration, colours, matching attires of the groomsmen and the bridal train, makeup, guests, even the food! Sadly, nothing can ruin all these as easily as a bad MC. It’s the job of the compere to create the mood of the ceremony, to be in charge and make everyone relax and generally make sure the program follows the order it should. Even though it’s the day of the bride and groom, the success or lack thereof of the wedding largely depends on the man who wields the mic. He’s the boss.

A lot of couples don’t understand how vital the position of this one person is and don’t attach much importance in hiring the right person. Some think it’s just about getting someone who will make the guests throw back their heads, laugh and forget their worries irrespectective of what it is they are laughing about.

Now you know how easily you can ruin your wedding with a wrong choice of MC, here are some things to look out for in choosing the right person:

1. Hire someone who doesn’t make insensitive jokes at the couple or anyone else

When it comes to entertainment, a lot of people (comedians especially) don’t really care about what they say. They desperately try to sell their act and sadly, a lot of people don’t see the wrong in this. Not even the couple! Somethings should not be talked about in weddings. Things like sex styles, how the bride should bow when serving food to the husband and the likes of it are just not funny. I think it’s even lame to ask the couples what they’ll call themselves. I mean, what has that got to do with anything? There are somethings said that can put the couple, their parents, everyone in uncomfortable positions. Pick an MC who entertains you and your guests without putting anyone in an awkward position.

2. Hire someone who will respect your audience

Your audience are very dear to you and that’s probably why you invited them. It will be a shame to pay someone to come and be disrespectful to them. You should look out for an MC who can pronounce their names and titles correctly too. Someone who pays great attention to details.

3. Hire someone who can control your audience without being disrespectful

Yes, it’s true that some guests can be annoying and a nuisance but pick an MC who can calm the situation, get them to do what they should without insulting or hurting their feelings. “Please can I have your attention” is always better than shouting “keep quiet!”. Get someone who is so good your audience like him and as a result listen to and obey him. Someone who can get the crowd to put down their cameras, stop walking up and down, stop talking, sit down while the food is being served etc without coming off as rude or arrogant.

4. Hire someone who will be there before your first guest arrives

He should be in time for your wedding. Your MC should wait for your audience not the other way round. He should be at the venue before the very first guest.

Here are two ways to determine if your MC can be/do all of the aforementioned;

  • His reputation

What kind of MC is he? Does he deliver his job well? What kind of events does he host? What do people he has worked for say about him? How were the events he has hosted? Make your enquires. It’s very important.

  • Does he ask the the right questions?

When discussing details of your wedding with him, does he ask the right questions or is it just the money he is interested in? Does he ask things like; Who would you like to acknowledge or ignore? Who can change plans of the event if you are not there? How long will this last? What are the titles of people you want to be recognized? What’s your expectation? How many guests are coming? etc. These and other smart questions show he knows his game.

I hope this helps you pick the right person. You are welcome!
