It’s not often that all eight Ivy League colleges in the US open their gates to one applicant, but 17-year-old, Augusta Uwamanzu-Nna, daughter of Nigerian immigrants has managed to achieve a feat that is impossible to most.
For Augusta, a senior at Elmont Memorial High School, this is no small feat accordng to Dean Skarlis, president of the counseling service College Advisor of New York, who is of the opinion that exceptional students are better off applying to only a few Ivy League schools, along with several “probables” and a couple of safety schools, just to be ‘safe’.
He says, “Just because, with their acceptance rates between 4 and 12 percent, if you put all those eggs in those baskets — most kids don’t get any if they apply,” he said. “It’s extremely competitive.”
But those who ‘know’ aren’t always right, because on March 31st, Augusta got ‘Yes-es’ from Harvard, Dartmouth, Princeton, The University of Pennsylvania, Cornell, Yale, Columbia, and Brown.
In addition to the Ivies, she also won admission to Johns Hopkins University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, New York University and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; But here’s the tough part, she has until May 1st to pick just one…Hard yeah?
This brings her close to Harold Ekeh, another Nigerian who was accepted to 13 universities, including all eight Ivies, in 2015.
And here’s a fun fact, Augusta and Harold are close friends…
