Nobody Told Me Heels Can Cripple You – A First Timer’s Experience

Heels make you look elegant. Heels make you stand out. Heels make you look sexy. Heels make you look hot and blah blah blah. Nobody told me heels make you crippled!

Expectations
Reality

The first time I walked out in real heels was after my secondary school. I had just bought these cheap fairly-used pair of high heels and was so eager to go to church on Sunday. I walked the passage of the house all weekend and couldn’t wait to walk the runway of the world. It fitted perfectly at home. Everyone said it was good. Well, everyone except my dad.

“You look like a masquerade on a stilt.”

Those were his exact words – except I’m mixing stories. Whichever way, no ‘henemy’ of progress will stop me. I serve a living God!

Sunday morning. First to wake, quick shower, hurried dressing, eagle claws eyebrows and of course my heels which were the last and most important things, I marched off to church with my brother!

I didn’t carry a pair of slippers. Didn’t know people do that, so the thought didn’t occur to me. About two minutes from home, I began to wonder if it was the same heels I had worn all weekend or another one that I had on. It was different… uncomfortable.

5 minutes more I began shivering and sweating at the same time. It seemed like we had been walking forever yet the place we would take taxi wasn’t in sight. My legs were shaking. A friend who joined us was laughing now. A Spartan dies but never surrenders! I kept on. Nothing can stop me. I serve a living God.

The whole experience from home to church was the most dreadful walk of my life. After church, I refused to remove the shoes and walk barefooted even when I was advised to. A Spartan dies but never surrenders.

It wasn’t till it felt like I was losing my ability to walk I realised I wasn’t a Spartan and borrowed myself sense. I wasn’t born a cripple, I refused to make myself one. I removed the shoes, held it in one hand and my remaining pride in another. That was how I walked home barefooted.

I never wore those shoes ever again.

Lesson Learnt

. The floor of your house is different from the floor of the outside world. I don’t know how this works but it’s true.

. Make sure a heel is very comfortable before you wear it out.

. If you haven’t mastered the ‘art’ of walking in heels or if it’s a heel you aren’t really sure about, carry an extra pair of comfortable footwear along (slippers, sandals, flat shoe etc)

.You are not a Spartan. If those heels ain’t working for you, remove it. I repeat, you are not a Spartan!
