Nigerian womenswear label, Maki Oh presented her AW 17 collection at the ongoing New York Fashion Week.
The presentation took place at the Space Studios in New York with models parading in front of a yellow and black backdrop reminiscent of the yellow taxis and Danfo buses in Lagos.
The designer, Amaka Osakwe continued to pay homage to her Nigerian roots by infusing african prints in a few pieces as well as a bold plastering of the popular Nigerian adage, “No condition is permanent” on a nude blouse.
She has never been one to hold back on expressing her creativity or threading the edgy path and this collection is no different. We saw cut-outs in the most random places like the red high-waist leather pants that featured a hole close to the crotch.
The collection looks spontaneous and seems to be lacking in theme. It’s definitely not her best collection but I don’t think it’s by any mile, a bad one. A good number of the pieces will look good styled differently or as separates and I totally see Eku Edewor and Genevieve Nnaji rocking some of the pieces.
