Research Shows Marijuana Lasts Up To 6 Days in Breast Milk After Use

Drug Use In Pregnant Women And New Mothers Is On The Rise

A new study conducted by Paediatrics shows that chemicals from marijuana can be found in breast milk after almost a week of use.

Th chemical tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC is one of the most active components of marijuana providing a false high. The chemical still leaves up to 50% traces in breast milk after 6 days of consumption of any form of marijuana.

Speaking with CNN, senior study author, Christina Chamber said

“Whether this means that some level—or any level—of these metabolites can negatively influence child development is unknown at this point…this is a call to action to take the next steps to study long-term outcomes in these children.”

Women who use marijuana during pregnancy cited their source of information as mother groups online where other women claimed marijuana is helpful during pregnancy as it helps with nausea and morning sickness. In a recent study conducted in the journal Obstetrics and Gynaecology, statistics show that 70 percent of cannabis dispensaries in Colorado recommended marijuana to treat morning sickness during the first trimester.

However, research has also show that THC can easily cross the placenta and accumulate in the brain and fat of a foetus. They also suggest that prenatal exposure to marijuana could cause harm to children’s concentration, attention, impulse control and problem-solving.
