Rihanna At 30: A Look At The Singer’s Style Evolution Through The Years

Ever since she came on the scene in 2005, Rihanna has continued to win us over with every changing haircut, every red carpet appearance and every street style.

The Bajan beauty hasn’t only proven that she is a trendsetter, she has also cemented her status as a fashion icon and one of the most stylish women to ever walk the earth.

There might have been a few of her looks that wasn’t necessarily our cup of tea but one thing is sure, if there’s anyone who can pull off a look – any look at all, it is Rihanna Robyn Fenty.

As she turns 30 today, we take a look at her style evolution from 2005 till date.

2005 – Baggie jeans, cropped tops, hoop earrings, trainers. She was just like every other teenager.

2006 – Saw her experimenting with her looks but going mostly for a sweetheart image.

2007 – It was the ‘Umbrella’ era and she was growing into her own woman.

2008 – Having just left her teenage years, she became a little more assertive with her style and began wearing her hair shorter.

2009 – her 2008 style carried on well into the year.

2010 – she made a comeback after the Chris Brown incident and her style was a little bolder than before.

2011 – Grown woman with absolutely no fucks to give. Her red hair became something of a signature.

2012 – Still doing her thing and rocking blonde hair more and more because well, blondes have more fun.

2013

2014 – she continued to make it clear that she was playing the fashion game by her own rules. And deservedly got honoured with the Fashion Icon award at the CFDAs. (We can’t forget her daring Swarovski dress that literally broke the internet)

2015 – She made quite a lot of fashion statements in 2015. Too many to count.

2016 – She couldn’t be bothered with rules. Rihanna wears whatever Rihanna wants to.

2017 – Rih was taking no prisoners. The launch of her beauty line, Fenty Beauty across the world’s major cities saw her serve major look after major look. And she was killing it on the red carpet just as much as she was killing it on the streets. She made the baggy clothes and quirky sunnies trendy again, showed up to the Met Gala in a show-stopping ensemble by Comme des Garcons, and generally gave the fashion rule book as it were, a middle finger.

This year also introduced us to Thickanna and taught us a thing or two about dressing curves.

2018 – Rihanna is finally bidding her 20’s goodbye and we’re waiting, breaths abated, for what this would mean for the fashion icon’s style. Going by the few times she has stepped out this year though, it looks like we’d be seeing a good deal of the grown woman, I-do-what-I-want Rih.

Which of her fashion eras is your favourite? Tell us in the comments section below.
