The term ‘love language’ is one that has been thrown around a lot but most of us don’t actually understand what it means.
It is important to note that while one may lean towards one or two love languages, it does not mean you can not occasionally appreciate the display of other love languages.
Below are the five love languages according to Gary Chapman:
1) Acts of Service
When it comes to this love language actions mean a lot more than words do. Simple things like making the bed or dusting appliances around the house all qualify as acts of service. For people whose love language is acts of services anything to ease the burden of responsibilities is enough to show you care about them.
The words they most want to hear: “Let me do that for you.”
2) Quality Time
For people whose love language is quality time, nothing says, “I love you,” like full, undivided attention. Being there for this type of person is critical an makes them feel truly special and loved. Quality time also means sharing quality conversation and activities.
3) Words of Affirmation
If this is your love language then compliments mean the world to you. Hearing the words, “I love you,” are important and hearing the reasons behind that love sends leaves you extremely pleased. Insults can leave you shattered and are not easily forgotten.
4) Physical Touch
Whether it’s hugs, pats on the back, holding hands, and thoughtful touches on the arm, shoulder, or face they can all be ways to show excitement, concern, care, and love. Physical presence and accessibility are very important.
5) Receiving Gifts
It’s easy to mistake this love language for materialism but really it’s just a case of the receiver of gifts thriving on the love thoughtfulness and effort behind a gift.
If this is your love language then the perfect gift or gesture shows that you are known, you are cared for, and you are prized above whatever was sacrificed to bring the gift to you.
