After Years Of Forcing Victims To Marry Their Rapists, Somaliland Passes Its First Law Against Rape

I guess it’s safe to say Good Morning Somaliland!

The self-declared republic just passed its first law against rape since it broke away from Somali in 1991.

In a bid to completely stop the trend of rising rape cases in Somaliland, rapists in the self-declared republic will now get up to 30 years in jail for their crime.

The law will criminalise all forms of sexual offence including rape, gang rape, sexual assault, trafficking and child marriage. Also, rapists who infect their victims with HIV would receive life sentences.

The move is a commendable one, even if some people are of the opinion that they’re doing it to spite Somalia which up till now, do not have a law against rape.
