Pre-wedding photo shoots have become a staple in the Nigerian wedding scene. And who doesn’t love a flawlessly executed pre-wedding shoot? It’s become a gorgeous way to announce one’s impending nuptials. It’s also something to show the grandkids later on. *wink*
Pre-wedding photo shoots are also a great way for the couple to bond and defuse all of the tension and stress that can accumulate in the process of planning a wedding. Here are a few things you’ll need to know to execute a successful pre-wedding photo shoot.
Do some planning
Have you noticed that when you rush into doing stuff, the result usually is somewhat half-baked? Planning the pre-wedding shoot might not be high on your priority list in the months leading to the wedding, but it’s necessary to ensure you do something you won’t be ashamed to share on social media. You should also decide how much you and your partner are willing to spend on the shoot at this point.
There are so many themes that it can get confusing. I’ll suggest that you visit Instagram and Pinterest for inspiration, then choose something you and your partner can effortlessly pull off. Be honest. How many pre-wedding photo fails have you laughed at? Then don’t make yourself the butt of the internet’s jokes. No need to go overboard. Just be yourself, else you both will look weird and stilted in the photos, and it will be a waste of money.
Need theme ideas? Try a traditional, minimalistic (think simple outfits and monochrome photos), retro, casual, or a beach theme. The possibilities are endless.
Outfits
You’ve got the theme locked down, so now it’s time to decide the outfits you’ll wear. Make sure you plan this well in advance, to avoid ‘stories that touch’. Again, you’ll find lots of ideas on Instagram and Pinterest, but let your theme and comfort guide your choices.
Tip: Look out for the texture, colour, and quality of your fabrics. Great fabrics can make a simple style look mind-blowing.
Scout for location
From the theme you’ve chosen, and the budget you’ve both set, it gets easier to choose a location. Still thinking of ideas? You can use your home, parks, the beach, popular monuments, or landmarks.
Tip: Lekki Conservation Centre is quite popular for pre-wedding shoots, but how about trying something different? Visit Olumo Rock, or the Jaekel Railway Museum in Lagos and see if it’ll work for your theme.
Consider timing
What kind of look do you want for your pre-wedding photo shoot? Would you like a sunrise or a sunset setting? Or would you want a night shoot? Make these decisions and ensure that everyone involved (partner, makeup artist, photographer) gets to the location at the right time.
Select a photographer
Search Instagram with wedding-related hashtags, ask your friends for recommendations until you find one you like, trust, and whose costing fits into your budget. Make sure your photographer is a professional and is expert enough to help you pull off your theme.
Above all, just make sure you both have fun!
