For a lot of celebrities, being a philanthropist is a second occupation, it’s considered necessary. I mean, you can’t be making all that money and not give back, and so they do.
Angelina Jolie for example, travels to war torn countries to help out charitable organisations, and maybe adopt a child or two, no fuss. After a few years, even the media forget that her kids are ‘a product of charity’.
However, for Nigerian celebrities, this business of charity, is sadly another excuse for publicity, which makes one question the authenticity of their ‘kind’ intentions. And if you don’t agree, let me give you instances.
- Visits to the orphanage
I doubt if our celebrities realise how cliche this is. Especially when every carton of Indomie noodles finds its way to Instagram where the donor can be praised.
- Community Development
Celebrities carrying out community development projects is no different from politicians sharing rice during election, with their photos splattered on the projects. So you’d know that ‘Nigga we did it!
- Walks For A Cause
This is perhaps the most annoying, although I’m not sure how. Still one would wonder how much actual support they offer people with cancer or AIDS or Lupus, as against photos of themselves posted on Instagram wearing fancy sneakers ‘walking for the cause’. Would it hurt to maybe put an actual victim up on their page or would that affect the general aesthetic…those wigs and cars are a lot more important I think.
Now before y’all start saying I’m hating or that I do not like Halima Abubakar, remember that first, this is MY opinion and second, hers (Halima Abubakar) were the first photos I found.????
