Tanzanian Government Is Banning Thirst Traps & Arresting Pregnant School Girls

There is definitely a ridiculousness contest going on among world leaders and right now, the Tanzanian president and his government are taking the cake.

President John Magufuli

The government led by John Magufuli has declared a war on women – especially the celebrities for posting their raunchy photos on social media. They have gone as far as banning some female musicians who defaulted from releasing music or performing for at least 6 months.

Women can no longer post photos such as this one in Tanzania

The ban, according to the country’s Assistant Minister of Information, Culture and Arts, Ms. Juliana Shonza, is aimed at protecting their morals and values as a society.

In her words, “An artist ought to have decent dressing in his/her work. An artist needs to be registered in order to do music in Tanzania and in a case where he/she goes against the laws of decent dressing, then he/she shall be banned from doing music for a period of not less than six months.”

The government, that is perhaps more of a moral police than an actual government, had also recently arrested pregnant schoolgirls and their mothers following an order by President Magufuli that pregnant girls and young nursing mothers should not be allowed into schools.

His reason: “After calculating some few mathematics she’d be asking the teacher in the classroom ‘let me go out and breastfeed my crying baby’. These NGOs (protesting the ban) should go out and open schools for parents. But they should not force the government [to take back the pupils]. “I’m giving out free education for students who have really decided to go and study, and now you want me to educate the parents? After getting pregnant, you are done!”

But these bans do not necessarily come as a surprise considering that the government had in the past reportedly banned miniskirts in a bid to curb HIV. Following the backlash he received, he was forced to issue a statement saying that the reports are untrue, even though he is a strong proponent of decent dressing. ????

One would think that, for a country who over 67.9% of her population lives below the poverty line, the government would have more pressing issues to deal with. But no, it’s thirst traps and policing women’s bodies that is their major concern.
