The Beauty of Nigerian Cultures Shown in Five Celebrity Weddings In 2022

Traditional weddings are one of the most important rites of passage for all cultures in Nigeria. In the Nigerian setting, marriage is not only the joining together of two individuals but a union of families – and as such traditional marriage ceremonies serve as a premise to show honour to the respective families, their cultures, and beliefs.

In 2022, we witnessed some of the most anticipated and biggest Nollywood weddings of the decade. Wedding party after wedding party – celebrities across Nigeria have been taking a new step in their romantic relationships and arranging some of the most iconic weddings of the decade. From exquisite fashion choices to the beauty of the ceremony in itself, love is indeed in the air this season.

Here are five of the most stylish celebrity brides we saw in 2022.

Kemi Adetiba had the opportunity to plan a real-life wedding party, and it was gracious. The traditional wedding-themed ‘Celebrating Culture – Flamboyantly Nigerian’ was rich in cultural attire both by the couple and the guests.

The Director of the award-winning film ‘The Wedding Party’ and her husband, Oscar Heman-Ackah, became the lead actors in Adetiba’s productions as their outfits were tailored toward all the tribes they represent.

For her first look, Kemi Adetiba channelled her father’s Yoruba culture with a dress from Hertunba; her mother’s Akwa Ibom influence with a traditional attire made by Toju Foyeh. She wrapped the ceremony up in a Kente piece by Matopeda Atelier that represents her husband’s Ghanian side.

All these outfits had their accessories match the outfits and culture to the letter and it’s all courtesy of Urezkulture. Kemi Adetiba’s ceremony was rich and overflowing in culture and style. All her outfits were styled by Princewill Ikechukwu Urum.

For Ini Dima-Okojie‘s ceremony, she kept it elegant but simple. For her civil wedding, she wore two-piece pants and a rose-like wrapped blouse designed by Derin Fabikun. Her traditional attire was an embodiment of cultures as she channelled her Edo roots and her husband’s Efik roots.

The actress wore an Edo traditional red dress made by Tubo for her traditional wedding and also wore an Efik-inspired look made by Lanre Da Silva Ajayi. Her accessories and everything were to match, and attention was paid to details to represent the cultures appropriately. Her after-party look was a simple yet stunningly patterned dress from Tubo.

Her wedding dress was not short of excellence as the bride glowed through her chocolate love story in a custom-made dress made by Mazelle Bridal. She ended the night with her reception dress from her friend and designer Derin Fabikun.

The range of outfits during Ini Dima-Okojie’s wedding was second to none.

Rita Dominic’s wedding was one of the most talked about weddings this year as she had her traditional wedding to Fidelis Anosike, the founder of Folio Media, owners of the Daily Times, and Miss Nigeria pageant.

The veteran actress who had her traditional outfit custom-made by Tubo looked like the Mbaise bride she was in the dress. Her accessories did the talking, and her outfit made a statement.

Not only was her first traditional dress stunning, but her second dress for her reception was also a stunner. The custom Igba Nkwu dress, which was hand beaded with coral and beautifully structured, fit Rita to the T! She was looking expensive while channelling her culture and executing it perfectly with the help of Tubo.

For her white wedding ceremony that was held on Saturday, November 27, 2022, at Carlton Towers in Southeast Selby, North Yorkshire, England, Rita Dominic, styled by her long-time stylist Yummie Ogbebor wore a custom-made wedding dress designed by Michael Cinco for her first look.

For her second look, Rita Dominic wore a mermaid bridal dress made by Nigerian designer Tubo, and she ended the night in a short white dress short white off-shoulder dress designed by Lanre Da Silva Ajayi.

Erica Godfrey was the Igbo bride with the modern depiction of the George fabric and a blouse set for her wedding. The red Igba Nkwu (Igbo traditional bridal dress) was designed by Oobiuku. The dress, which was embroidered with silver accents and paired with white coral beads, made the bride look like royalty.

Her second traditional dress was from Bibi Lawrence, the bride, styled by Chizaram and Olori Awelewa, wore a pink dress made of velvet and embroidered with gold accessories. She completed the look with lots of red beaded accessories.

Long-time Peggy fans know that if it’s one thing our ‘Ego Oyinbo’ would do, is slay. The actress, who married her actor husband, Freddie Leonard, on November 20, 2022, wore two traditional dresses for her traditional marriage.

Both of her dresses from Prudential Styling were bold and uniquely structured. The first dress was a white dress carefully designed with beads and pearls. The bottom half was draped with a white net embroidered with gold accessories.

Her second look was a pink dress with uniquely structured sleeves and gold embroideries. She paired both of her outfits with red choker beads and bracelets.

Nigerian weddings are in a class of their own as both the families involved spend millions on outfits, food, aesthetics, and every other detail needed. One important thing to note at every Nigerian wedding is that it’s a blend of cultures, from the bridal dresses to the food choices, the couples’ cultures are always well represented.
