A 26-year-old Tennessee woman,Tina Gibson has given birth to a healthy girl born of an embryo frozen for 25 years, the mother being only 18months herself when the embryo was frozen.
The couple decided to adopt a frozen embryo from the National Embryo Donation Center in Knoxville, Tennessee because they couldn’t conceive naturally as Mr Gibson,33 had cystic fibrosis which causes infertility. They only learned that the embryo had been frozen almost two and a half decades ago after it had been implanted into Mrs Gibson.
The frozen embryo was transferred to Tina in March in a procedure identical to In Vitro Fertilization-IVF.
Mrs Gibson said: “I was like wow, if this embryo had been born when it was supposed to have been, I was like ‘we could have been best friends, I’m only 25’.”
“Emma is such a sweet miracle,” her dad, Benjamin Gibson said in a press release from the center. “I think she looks pretty perfect to have been frozen all those years ago.”
The baby Emma Wren now holds the record for oldest frozen embryo to be born, according to University of Tennessee Preston Medical Library staff.
