A Beginner’s Guide To Improving Your Personal Style

Finding your style can be one of the most difficult things to do, especially when there is no guide on how to go about it. It’s easy to buy clothes, but it can be difficult to be stylish even with a wardrobe full of clothes, and that’s because we end up buying clothes that look good for an occasion rather than clothes that fit into our wardrobes and personal style.

An important thing to note about creating your style is to think of it as timeless instead of momentarily trying to look good, especially if you’re working with a budget. Personal style has a lot to do with self-esteem, having a mind of your own, expressing yourself, and daring to be different.

Here are some guides on how to improve your style.

Go Through Your Closet

What outfits do you feel the most confident in? What dresses flatter your body type? What colours suit your tone? What are you trying to say with your outfit? It might not seem like it’s this deep but whatever you wear sends a message to whoever sees you.

Declutter your wardrobe of any clothing item that doesn’t fit into how you want to be seen, and then arrange the clothes that fit into what you envision your dream wardrobe to be like.

Find Your Fashion Inspiration

Based on what you’ve decided to be your ‘aesthetics’, find your fashion inspiration. Check Instagram, Google, or Pinterest for someone whose dress sense relates to how you want to dress. It ultimately gives you an overview of what you need to upgrade your style.

Create A Mood Board

Mood boards help you see if you can achieve your style with whatever clothes you have in your wardrobe, and they give you an insight into what you need to complete your outfits.

Creating a mood board is like saying in plain terms this is what I have, and this is what I can create with it based on my current wardrobe. However, I still need certain clothing pieces to get my ultimate look.

Experiment

Do not be afraid to experiment. Fashion is supposed to be expressive, let your imaginations run wide, and pair outfits based on that. The only rule you have to follow in fashion is that the structure of your outfits must suit you.

Be Intentional When Purchasing Fashion Items

People tend to get carried away when they purchase fashion items. Just because you saw two gold chains that look gorgeous but are overall the same thing does not mean you have to purchase them. First, buy the necessities then you can splurge on your wants later.

Longevity Over Trends

Stick to the classics. Don’t buy a clothing item that you would not be able to wear six months from now because people have moved on from the trend. Even if you choose to buy trendy pieces make sure that they are pieces you truly love to wear after the trend disappears.

Trends never really go away, someone always brings them back, and those are the people that are the real fashionistas. Those people wear whatever they want regardless of trend and unknowingly start a whole movement.

Do all these, and you’re on the right track to finding your personal style.
