According to Reuters, more than 1.4 million people have been displaced by the disaster which has affected people across 33 of Nigeria’s 36 states, with over 600 confirmed deaths.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tunji Bello has also issued an advisory to residents of some areas in Lagos asking them to consider relocation as flooding is expected with the release of excess water from the Oyan Dam and Ogun River.

Considering the climate, nowhere is safe. So, we are bringing you five flooding safety tips you need to know this season.

Don’t Drive Through Flooded Roads

You might think you are safe in a car, but that’s not true. You’re most likely to drown without a getaway plan when you’re stuck in a car. Especially with the state of roads across Nigeria, a deep gully can cause irreparable damage.

Do Not Touch Electrical Equipments

If by chance you can access electricity during the flood, make sure you are not touching electrical equipments. This is why it is advisable to exit flooded buildings until it is safe to return to the house.

Buy Plastic Bags

Ziplocks, containers, waterproof nylons, get your house stocked with them, especially seeing the fact that places across Nigeria are being immersed in floods. This way you can salvage the damage by protecting your gadgets, clothes, and more if there is ever a flooding incident.

Avoid Swimming Or Moving In Floods Without Safety Precautions.

Anything can be in floods, from reptiles to harmful objects and even chemicals. So, it’s safe to stay out of the water, and in cases where it is impossible, it’s better to put on ankle boots to protect yourself from harm.

After Evacuation, Do Not Go Back Until The Property Has Been Fully Assessed

Once the flooding stops, there is no reason for the moving process to be fast. Make sure that you assess your house properly to prevent building collapse and even eventual harm as a result of reptiles that could have hidden in certain areas in your surroundings.

All these tips should keep you safe in case there is flooding in your area. But, the first option to always consider is evacuating your building first!
