Racism has been a big issue in the modelling and fashion industry since forever. But one would think that all the recent efforts made by key players in the industry to promote inclusion would have curbed it, alas, that is not the case.
Even sadder is the fact that the discrimination against black models is happening and thriving in Africa – a continent that despite being dominated by black people, is still obsessed with white and light-skinned women.
Nigerian model and first ever African ambassador for Elizabeth Arden, Adeola Ariyo took to her Twitter to lament the continuous disrespect of models of colour in Cape Town, South Africa sharing her own experience as a black model.

Models who do their own hair on set and fix make up should also get a stylist’s fee. On top of their model fee.

They had conveniently flewn only white models & 1 African American to an island to shoot & rest of the black models they left behind.

So 5 African models were expected to do their own hair and make up for a shoot meanwhile they had an entire glam squad on the island

On top of it,my images were used by the sponsor without permission to promote said island shoot. Meanwhile I was nowhere near the island

my shoot got postponed several times because the weather was bad in Cape Town. This was all before they jetted off to Mauritius.
