Racism has been a big issue in the modelling and fashion industry since forever. But one would think that all the recent efforts made by key players in the industry to promote inclusion would have curbed it, alas, that is not the case.
Even sadder is the fact that the discrimination against black models is happening and thriving in Africa – a continent that despite being dominated by black people, is still obsessed with white and light-skinned women.
Nigerian model and first ever African ambassador for Elizabeth Arden, Adeola Ariyo took to her Twitter to lament the continuous disrespect of models of colour in Cape Town, South Africa sharing her own experience as a black model.
See her tweets below.
Models who do their own hair on set and fix make up should also get a stylist’s fee. On top of their model fee.

We go to set with our own foundation, powder, hair products, OUR OWN WIGS! Man pay up

Better get started because these issues need to be known. It’s becoming ridiculous https://t.co/QK37EjOuSl

I recently turned down a job because they requested I be on set at 7am with my hair and make up already done. Not a test shoot, an actual JOB
— ADEOLA ARIYO (@AdeolaAriyo) October 17, 2017
They had conveniently flewn only white models & 1 African American to an island to shoot & rest of the black models they left behind.
— ADEOLA ARIYO (@AdeolaAriyo) October 17, 2017
So 5 African models were expected to do their own hair and make up for a shoot meanwhile they had an entire glam squad on the island

On top of it,my images were used by the sponsor without permission to promote said island shoot. Meanwhile I was nowhere near the island
— ADEOLA ARIYO (@AdeolaAriyo) October 17, 2017
Images that had NOTHING to do with said shoot or sponsor. They thought they could basically get away with all of this

I was nowhere near Mauritius guys. But alas, you’d think I was right ? pic.twitter.com/PlTDXdRFum

Then as if that post wasn’t bad enough, the sponsor decided to use my image again, without permission as their banner on twitter. pic.twitter.com/azVqefGRfI

The audacity of it all. I’m freezing my ass in Cape Town waiting for them to get back from Mauritius just to be asked to do my own hair & MU
— ADEOLA ARIYO (@AdeolaAriyo) October 17, 2017
my shoot got postponed several times because the weather was bad in Cape Town. This was all before they jetted off to Mauritius.
— ADEOLA ARIYO (@AdeolaAriyo) October 17, 2017
Why did they leave all the black girls to shoot in Cape Town but were able to fly in girls from all over the world to go shoot on an island?
— ADEOLA ARIYO (@AdeolaAriyo) October 17, 2017
Black models need to be treated better. And black models need to open their mouths and SPEAK UP! And stop kissin ass! And accepting rubbish
