The new season of MTV Shuga titled MTV Shuga: Alone Together has been exploring the impact of coronavirus on the lifestyle of young Africans from different backgrounds, and how they are coping with this new reality.
The mini-series was self-filmed by MTV Shuga actors from four African countries – Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, and South Africa.
Last week, five amazing episodes were released, and here are some major things that happened.
Wasiu’s blast from the past
Wasiu the Wazkid is back and he’s still trying to hustle up some sales via his Instagram Live. The dude needs money, and he needs it fast. Later on, he gets a call from an old friend, Ebisinde, and they both catch up.
Wasiu is acting like coronavirus is not a threat anymore, but Ebisinde reminds him that there’s a curfew, and that coronavirus is real, regardless. Wasiu thinks Ebi is just being a killjoy. Ebisinde finds out that Wasiu is not taking his ARVs, but Wasiu says he’s broke.
Dineo is being shady
Okay, so maybe she’s not being literally shady. Kabelo has been getting violent with Dineo. Last week, she confided in Daniel, but there’s only so much he can do because he is stuck in Abidjan while she’s in South Africa. Dineo has a video call with Zamo, and she wears sunshades to hide the bruises Kabelo has given her. When Zamo tries to question her, she evades the questions and quickly hangs up.
Leo thinks ignorance is bliss
Leo is still sick and coughing, but he’s ignoring that and trying to act like everything is normal. Zamo, in her usual blunt style, straight up asks him to consider that he might have COVID-19 and to take proper steps. Leo admits that he doesn’t really want to know for sure whether he’s got COVID-19 or not. He thinks that confirming his COVID status might make him feel sicker than he already does and that he does not want to deal with the stigma of being a coronavirus victim.
For Zamo, it’s COVID-19 vs hunger
Zamo is seriously broke. She was hoping to get money from a client even though it would mean going to offer home services, but the client has bailed on her. Dineo can’t help her out with cash because of Kabelo and neither can Leo – Leo’s money is still tied up in the cancelled concert.
At this point, Zamo is ready to go out if it means making some money because, for her, it’s better than staying indoors and dying of hunger.
Lockdown or not, love is in the air
Ebisinde and his girlfriend, Cynthia are all lovey-dovey as they have a virtual dinner. Guess what’s on the menu? Garri and groundnuts.
Cynthia confesses to her friend Hadiza that she’s ready to move her relationship with Ebi to the next level. Hadiza encourages her to talk to him about it.
Cynthia then opens up to Ebi about wanting a more intimate relationship with him and asks him to sneak out to meet with her. Ebisinde is a little nervous about this and suggested that they wait till after the coronavirus situation calms down somewhat.
Bongi is still worried about her aunt
Bongi’s Aunt Nomalanga was released from the hospital because she was not showing severe symptoms of COVID-19. Unfortunately, Episode 15 ends with Bongi getting a call from Lemo (who’s staying at home with her aunt) to inform her that Nomalanga’s situation has gotten worse and that she’d be taken to the hospital.
Now Bongi won’t be able to stop worrying.
Wasiu leaves his house (without a mask!) and even though he told Ebisinde that he’s going to get his ARVs, we’ve got a bad feeling that he’s up to no good.
We’re looking forward to finding out how Dineo will deal with Kabelo, and catch up with the rest of the Shuga gang next week.
