What’s fascinating is that we can switch it up effortlessly. When those fancy black-tie events come calling, we know how to answer in style, rocking tantalising tuxedos and stunning dresses that turn heads.
When a nearly 200-year-old whisky brand from the lush Scottish Highlands invites only 30 inspiring Nigerians to experience two of its offerings in a swanky location in Lagos with an invitation that says ‘black tie’, best believe that guests will answer in style and we are here for it.
If you are one of the lucky few in Lagos who got the invite, we decided to share a few tips and stunning looks from the past few months that will give you EVERYTHING you need to know about stepping on necks this Friday, September 8, 2023.
If you did not get the invite, let’s hope that, just like us, our invites got stuck in the outbox, which means we’d plot our revenge by stalking everyone on Instagram when the event rolls around.

1. The Sharp Patterned Blazer
A lady can never go wrong with an androgynous look. And what is better than a colourful well-tailored blazer paired with an all-black look? It screams classy and boss-lady in one tune!
#Tip: Avoid pairing a colourful blazer with an equally colourful pair of trousers/skirt and top/corset. It takes a pro to match patterns and is usually safe to tread lightly.
2. Bold Monochrome Colours
When in doubt, go with a bold colour that works with your tone. Do not get us started on the warm, earth and cool tone dynamics. But just choose a colour that works and splurge on a head-turning outfit in that colour. You want the room to stop and stare? This is your answer!
#TIP: Do not be scared to pair with colourful accessories – just know that less is more. You want to give off Osas Ighodaro vibes, not Bob Risky.

4. Stunning White Dress
Long gone are the days when white floor-length dresses were the reserve of weddings and brides. Now, if you have an occasion strong enough to pull the stops for, go all out.
You can even have an eclectic spin on the white and add splashes of colour right on your dress or in the accessories. But you cannot go wrong in white.
#TIP: Please, do not wear white shoes. You will be tempted, but resist it all.
5. The Wide Leg Pants
Ladies, let the legs breathe sometimes. You do not always have to be in that figure-hugging outfit. The corsets and bandage dresses are nice, but really? Sometimes, you want to breathe and enjoy peace. And it is possible to look just as gorgeous.
A jumpsuit or a two-piece would work. Whether patterned or a solid block of colours, you can rock that look and leave us wishing.

6. Suit with a pop of colour
For men, you can easily stand out and make a statement in a double-breasted pastel-coloured suit on any occasion.
This particular bold colour choice can be toned down or up to create an effortless look. But don’t stop there – accessorise with a necklace, a neck scarf, a cravat or a cool bead bracelet to add an extra touch of sophistication.

7. The black suit
A black blazer that effortlessly combines class and comfort is a timeless essential in any wardrobe. Ensure the trousers are expertly tailored to create a clean line and emphasise your stature. To complete the look, add a pair of patent leather shoes for a polished and debonair finish. You got this!

8. Traditional Luxury
Who says black tie has to be ‘English’? We are still pinning over Ebuka Obi-Uchendu’s look at Adesua and Banky W’s wedding eons ago. If that was not class upon class, we do not know what that is.
Before we go on a thirst trap tirade, you can rock your traditional wear and still be black-tie compliant. Just please, do not wear sandals – no matter the designer or how expensive they are. It is not even a question.
#TIP: If you are not the shy type, some beads and some sparkle can tie the look together. If you are more conservative, you can leave your shoes to do all the talking.
