Memoirs of A Girl in The Big City – Episode 3

By Tonye Hamilton

Read episode 1 and episode 2

It was supposed to be a beautiful Saturday morning; early morning run on the Lekki-Ikoyi bridge followed by breakfast at Café Vanessa with a couple of my exercise buddies (Lekki-Ikoyi bridge= Networking) but thanks to the events from last night, I just want to sleep in all day.

“Knock Knock”

Me: Oh My Goddddd!!!!!!! Not this morning…..

“Kaaro oko mi”

“Good morning mummy”……with the way she speaks Yoruba one would think she is from Lagos state but I guess being married to a Lagosian for over 30 years dilutes your Ijaw roots(explains why my first name is Tonye).

“Did you sleep well??

“Yes mum, I did”…………why do I sense the sarcasm coming?

“I had to ask after coming back home at an ungodly hour, you know no man will see the way you keep late nights and want to marry you.”

Here we go again…..the usual chorus……..”yes mum.”

“This  is not a yes mum situation oh!! Age is not on your side…”

“But ma!!!”

“Shhhhhh C’mon let me finish, Is that how you will be interrupting your mother-in-law???”

“I’m sorry ma”

“You need to start behaving like a woman a man will want to marry, my daughter you know I love you and I always want what’s best for you. That your friend is a very bad influence… whats her name again??? Fa..Fathi…”

“Farida”

“Ehen!! She is too lousy plus you know her parents are going to end up arranging her marriage and time is not on your side…You will be the one to lose out in the end. Take my advice, this is coming from a place of love and experience.”

“Ok ma, thanks”……. Can I go back to bed now???

Bless Jesus, she finally stands up to leave………”Your mates are making breakfast for their husband, stay there. By the way your sister is coming in tomorrow…..”

Can this week get any worse, first Tunde now Belema….that’s my sister.

You might wonder why I never spoke of her; let’s just say she is my arc-nemesis. Always been the prettiest, gets all the attention from boys and my MUM, thinks she is the smarter one and the best thing that happened to life after sliced bread.

To crown it up, we both work in the medical field…let me be honest, she is a surgeon at John Hopkins (I admit she kicked my butt in that department).

She is the last person I wanna see right now, at least I have enough time to prepare myself……

Despite the fuel scarcity, there are still be so many cars on the road…… traffic will not let me be great. Anyways, its 5:30pm and I am glad I made it in time to see the new Genevieve movie “Road to Yesterday” plus I’m sure Farida will not have it if I’d gotten there late.

After 1hr30 mins of not wasting my time, I rate the movie an 8.5/10. It was a really nice watch…Kudos Genevieve!

“Hey”

I pause in my tracks, I’m pretty sure the source of the voice is wearing Gucci Oud….In addition to my many superpowers, I have the sense of smell of a greyhound.

Gucci slip-ons, Gucci stretch gabardine slim pants, Gucci cotton polo with web crest, Carrera 36 Japan movement flyback chronograph …….One thing is sure, whoever this guy is, he loves Gucci! Thumbs up for style tho.

I’m sure you are wondering how I know in detail what he is wearing, I mentioned earlier…. superpowers…back to my gist.

“Hello…”

He grabs my phone from my hand before I can finish my sentence, dials his phone number and says…”I’ll pick you up for dinner tomorrow at 6pm” and walks away.

What the????

Who does he think he is?

What just happened??

************************

I am Tonye Oluwasegun Hamilton and my big city is Lagos………..

To be continued…
