Memoirs of A Girl in The Big City

By Tonye Hamilton

We’re introducing a new series by an awesome writer, and trust us, it’s such a great story, that you have no idea what’s coming. So stay for the ride and enjoy…We’ll be dropping new episodes every Friday. Remember to share your comments, we love feedback!

Ggggggrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!! Gggggggggrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!! Gggggggggrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!

Oh my God! I can’t believe its been a week already, I’ve been too busy enjoying the mini holiday between jobs. Yeah, that’s right…I start a new job today as an A&R Executive in one of the biggest record labels in my big city.

Imagine the look on my mum’s face when I told her that I was finally leaving my job at the hospital to pursue my passion – Music.

” You should have told us you wanted to become a musician before letting us waste all that money on your education” that was her rejoinder, and it has become the usual chorus from every single person I’ve told, as I’m constantly reminded of  my medical background; a part of my life I don’t regret but will like to forget in a hurry.

Anyways……I am not going to let that thought stand in the way of my greatness! Which is why I manage to drag myself out of bed, at barely past 5am, although my office is just 30 minutes away from the house, but the the traffic situation is usually unpredictable plus I want to make an impression on my first day, so I can’t afford to be late.

Trust your girl to have already laid out the outfit ‘to slay on the first day’ – it’s a mixture of high end and pocket friendly clothing.

I finally make it to work at 7:35am (like I said earlier- first day impression), graduating with a first class degree in medicine was the right incentive to make my Professor father turn into father Christmas- he gifted me with a range rover evoque. Personally, I like my cars full size but c’mon it’s a range…..who cares the size? After parking Leo (yes, my range evoque has a name), I step out in my Sunday best feeling like a fresh bag of chips and all. Until someone rudely calling my name, “Miss Hamilton! Miss Hamilton!”…..snaps me back to reality.

No!!!!!!!!!!!!! the new job doesn’t start for another month and I am still stuck here at the clinic. What a life!!!

And trust time to drag by…My only consolation least is that thing tonight with the girls, thank God for nightlife in Lagos, especially on a Fridays…Whoop Whoop!

By the time I pull up at Farida’s office, and she is screaming at the top of her voice as usual, ‘YOU ARE LATE!!’.

‘Well……you should know Lagos traffic better by now plus I had patients to attend to, I hate my job doesn’t mean I shouldn’t  take care of them and like I always say, you have the option of going back to Abu Dhabi’… Yes, Farida is a ‘Johnny just come’, and you’ll get a complete low down soon. But first TGIF…

We finally arrive at Bottles for our dinner date before we proceed to dance the night away at various locations cos really who goes out to just one place on a Friday night in Lagos?

And as I’m about to start getting my groove on, I hear someone calling, “Segun, Segun…..” I feel a chill settle in, that voice is all too familiar………..

I am Tonye Oluwasegun Hamilton and my big city is Lagos………..

To be Continued.
