There is no event on earth that attracts the kind of fashion and fan fare that the Met Gala does.

Over the years, the revered stairs of the Metropolitan Museum of Art have been graced by one too many costumes – the good, the bleh and the unforgettable.

Ahead of this year’s edition which takes place tomorrow, we’re looking back at 26 most unforgettable looks to ever make it to the Met Gala.

Take a look.

This was in 1985 but she could still wear this absolutely gorgeous dress tomorrow and still make it to every best dressed list on the planet.

Donatella Versace

A year before Jennifer Lopez inducted this dress into the red carpet hall of fame, designer Donatella Versace stole the show with it at the Met Gala

Hillary Clinton

The best president America never had, Hilary’s look to the 2000 Met Gala is just one on the long list of things she’ll always be remembered by.

Sarah Jessica Parker

SJP is the queen of Met Gala. If this tartan prints dress by Alexander McQueen she wore in 2006 doesn’t convince you, her other looks below should.

In Oscar de la Renta at the 2014 Met.

SJP’s H&M look to the 2015 gala generated one too many internet memes. That headpiece was flames!!!

In 2011, Iman graced the Met Gala looking like she was dipped in gold. The gold Stella McCartney jumpsuit she wore perfectly blended into her golden skin and complimented her equally golden hair!

We won’t be forgetting Beyonce’s Ombre feathered Givenchy number to the 2012 Gala in a hurry.

And neither will we be forgetting her in all her sheer glory at the 2015 gala wearing a risqué number by her favourite Met Gala designer, Givenchy.

Who can forget this Dolce & Gabbana tuxedo and bow tie Ri wore in 2009?

The Bajan beautyRihanna went for a two-piece by Stella McCartney in 2014 and she looked divine in it.

Never forget! This was (is) the look of all looks. Rihanna opted for an elaborate fur-trimmed cape by a relatively unknown Chinese designer, Guo Pei in 2015. The dress was handmade by one woman and it reportedly took her 2 years to make. Totally worth it, if you ask me!

Florence Welch

Florence Welch in Alexander McQueen in 2012. The dress, the hair, the accessories! Still one of our best Met Gala looks!

Nina Dobrev

Nina went for an exquisite gold and black number by Donna Karan Atelier in 2012. Absolutely stunning!

Kim Kardashian

A heavily pregnant Kim finally got an invite to the Met Gala in 2013, thanks to Kanye. And although her floral dress was adjudged a miss by fashion critics, it will always be remembered… even if it’s for the wrong reasons.

Karolina Kurkova

Karolina Kurkova made a strong case for turban on the red carpet in 2012 wearing this stunning piece by Rachael Zoe that looked like it was painted onto her body.

Fan Bingbing

Chinese actress, Fan Bingbing was on our top 3 best looks at the 2015 Met Gala. Not only did she nail the theme of the year,‘China: Through the Looking Glass’, she looked exquisitely regal while at it. Her ensemble which was designed by Christopher Bu, featured a sequin gold dress and an ornately embroidered silk cape.

FKA Twigs

FKA Twigs wore this very artsy dress by Christopher Kane to the 2015 Met Gala. The intricately designed dress featured cut-outs of different parts of the human body including a PENIS! Nicely played!

Lupita Nyong’o

3 years later, we’re still trying to figure out what Lupita was thinking when she picked out this Prada number and we’re sure we aren’t the only ones.

Erykah Badu

The Erykah Badu giving zero fucks per usual in Givenchy in 2014. That hat!

Zendaya stole our hearts in this gorgeous golden number by Michael Kors and she topped it off with an edgy and absolutely sexy bowl cut that only a few people can pull off.

Anja Rubik

In 2012, Anja Rubik made sure all eyes were on her when she strutted into the Met Gala wearing this daring number with an endlessly high slit designed by Anthony Vaccarello.

Cate Blanchett

Here’s another timeless look – Cate Blanchett in Balenciaga in 2007.

Last year, Ciara was hard to miss on the red carpet in a high-collar, sleeveless silver metallic gown with from H&M and a matching hair colour.

Eva Longoria

Eva was all ruffles and pleats in 2008 wearing a wine coloured Marchesa dress.

Claire Danes

Claire Danes lit up the Met Gala in 2016 in a cinderella dress by Zac Posen infused with finer optic lights. If you still don’t get it, take a look at the picture below.
