Over the years, Karl Lagerfeld has built a reputation for over accessorising. In the 90s, when Coco Chanel printed out a simple black dress for the 1962 Vogue magazine cover, ‘The Little Black Dress’ immediately became one of the most influential pieces of clothing. Lagerfeld built on that legacy in 1983 while reviving the trend, but his twist was different.
Karl Lagerfeld doused the classic outfit in costume jewellery. When you see Chanel, you see stand-out jewellery pieces. In fact, there is no piece of jewellery that is associated with the Chanel image than Pearls and Lagerfeld masterfully used this.
Considering that the 2023 Met Gala was themed after Karl Lagerfeld, one would ordinarily have expected the carpet to be swamped in jewelleries, but the stars barely brought jewelleries to the red carpet, reducing the glamorousness of their outfits with their lack of accessories. Stars like Adut Akech, Song Hye Kyo, Emily Ratajwoski, down to Vittoria Ceretti, all opted for barely any jewelleries, and it’s concerning.
However, this trend started way before the Met Gala. During the Oscars, we could barely find a necklace on any of the actor’s necks, almost as if all the stylists had agreed to face out accessories. The request is simple, we need jewelleries back in season.
Jewelleries are a fashion statement, they elevate your style and immediately enhance a clothing item. So, to have the opportunity to attend fashion’s biggest night without doing all you can do to make a fashion statement is a waste and a disservice to the design channelled for the event. This same thought process applies to every major event, even in day-to-day styling.
Although some celebrities went for the ‘No Jewellery’ trend, some showed up and showed out, and we are glad. From Cardi B’s layered choker pearls paired with her Miss Sohee dress to Kim Kardashian’s fully pearled-out Schiaparelli dress, it was a dream, and we expect to see more of that at the forthcoming major red carpets.
