If you know Nigerians well, then you definitely know we are the type to make a show of anything – from business meetings to social gatherings, every event is an opportunity to showcase our great taste for fashion, and the 2023 elections fashion statements are proof.
For the 2023 elections, Nigerian politicians took fashion to a whole new level as they stepped out to campaign.
We take a look at some politicians who made fashion statements during this season.
Peter Obi
While most of his contemporaries were dressed in flowing ‘agbada’ and colourful caps, the Labour Party presidential candidate decided to keep it simple and sharp, and he stood out in his signature black attire. Even his LP-branded clothing was black!
Nyesom Wike
The Rivers State governor, who is one of the most talked about politicians in the 2023 elections, was almost never seen without his fedora hat. Whether the outfit was corporate, traditional, or business casual, he always topped it with a signature hat.
Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour
The Labour party gubernatorial candidate for Lagos state and self-acclaimed “Architect of Lagos” made some loud and clear statements during the election period, especially with his decision to wear all-white native attire.
Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan
The beautiful PDP senatorial candidate for Kogi Central district all but dazzled in every appearance she made this season. Her outfits did a great job keeping culture in vogue!
Bankole ‘Banky W’ Wellington
It’s no surprise that the celebrity-turned-politician maintained a distinct style from his contemporaries. From his clothing to his composure, Bankole Wellington, a.k.a Banky W, made his mark with the way he paired his “trad” outfits with his caps.
Yahaya Bello
The controversial Kogi state governor, who was mostly in the news for the wrong reasons during the 2023 elections, also made a point of stepping out in grand style with the slight “dent” in his cap. Though the style is peculiar to the Northerners, Governor Yahaya Bello seems to have made it his own!
Funke Akindele
Actress, filmmaker, and PDP deputy governorship candidate was nothing but herself during this election season, and that was quite the statement!
Ben Ayade
Unlike other governors, the governor of Cross River state made his fashion statement with the vintage style parting in his hair. What a way to show off his intact hairline (wink!). Even though he lost his senatorial election, his dashing look will linger in our memories when he eventually leaves office in May.
Dapo Abiodun
Here’s another governor who seems to have a thing for vintage style. Prince Dapo Abiodun’s round-framed glasses are probably the first thing you’d notice in nearly every photo of him.
Now we understand why many say he oozes ‘Sugar Daddy’ vibes.
Ademola Adeleke
The famous “dancing senator” is not only famous for his dancing skills but also the unique, bold style of his cap. It might be safe to say that his style is in sync with his personality.
Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed (Senator Binani)
Senator Binani of Adamawa Central Senatorial District and APC’s governorship candidate took the Northern traditional attire to another level. The simple, yet magnificent look suits her just right like a second skin.
Dino Melaye
Senator Dino Melaye is arguably one of the most fashionable politicians in Nigeria. On nearly every appearance, he breaks the cycle of corporate or agbada with his trendy and youthful outfits. Check out what he wore to represent the PDP’s governorship candidate at the national collation centre in Abuja during the presidential election in February 2023.
Amina Titi Atiku
When we say Nigerians are the type to make a show of anything, the wife to the PDP presidential candidate, Mrs Amina Titi Atiku adequately made our point during the election period with her ceremonious outfits.
Senator Oluremi Tinubu
Senator representing Lagos Central Senatorial District and soon-to-be First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu stood out in her timeless, signature Yoruba attire with her gele as the usual icing on the cake. Take a look at these pictures!
We couldn’t but notice her new addition to her usual outfits during the election. It was the veil she constantly used to cover her body, and many observers say it was an attempt to identify with Northern Nigerian women as she toured the country campaigning for her husband.
Bola Tinubu
They don’t call him ‘Jagaban’ for nothing! Nigeria’s president-elect made the statement of “broken shackles” with his longtime signature symbol on his cap that became a national dress code of a sort among his supporters. The symbol also featured prominently on his campaign logo.
